Wisdom begins in wonder

SOCRATES

In Art, Design & Technology we aim to give our students a sense of curiosity and the space to experiment and explore.  We also aim to create innovative problem solvers who are aware of the world around them, contribute positively to society and have big ambitions for the future and their place in it.

Knowledge and Skills

We have a holistic approach to the disciplines within our subject are and have projects that allow students to experience the full range of specialist rooms and equipment we have to offer.  To instil that sense of wonder, all of our projects have an overarching question.  Skills are developed and built upon as students progress through Key Stage 3, leaving them fully equipped to decide which area they may want to specialise in at Key Stage 4.

A Flight Path is used to assess and track students' progress throughout the year which gets broken down into three key areas: Knowledge, Skills and Outcome.

Enrichment

Our enrichment programme offers things like pottery, cooking, three-dimensional drawing and upcycling.

How can you help your child?

Ask your child what they have done in their Art, Design & Technology lessons, it would be good practice for them to recreate some of what they have done in school at home, for example using a particular art technique or cooking with a particular recipe or set of ingredients.  Also ask them what their homework is and how they are getting on with the assignment.

How can students extend their thinking and challenge themselves in this subject?

London has so many free museums and galleries to visit, so taking advantage of this and visiting these places will really help students to extend their knowledge and thinking within Art, Design & Technology and beyond.  Having a small sketchbook to use that is easy to carry is also really useful, observational drawings outside of lesson time would be really beneficial for students.

Knowledge and skills

At Key Stage 4 we offer four different pathways: 3D Design, Graphic Communication, Art and Hospitality and Catering.

Our 3D Design, Graphic Communication and Art qualifications are all GCSE courses run by the OCR exam board.  Students' end of course grades are based on 60% Coursework and 40% Final Examination.

Component 1 is the coursework element of the qualification and consists of a portfolio of work produced over a long period of time.

Component 2 is the examination element which students have time to prepare for in advance.  The examination takes place over 10 hours and will involve making the final piece which they have planned out.
