What knowledge and skills will students develop at KS3? 

Health & Social Care is not taught as a discrete subject during Key Stage 3, however elements of the topics and discussions involved in the study of this subject are embedded in the Academy's Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education and Religious Education course content.

What knowledge and skills will students develop at KS4? 

Welcome to the BTEC Level 1/2 Tech Award in Health & Social Care.

The Pearson BTEC Level 1/2 Tech Award in Health and Social Care aims to provide an introduction to the sector.  It is for students who are interested in learning about the health and social care sector as part of a balanced study programme.  When studying for a 'BTEC', learners can use the knowledge and skills from GCSEs, giving them the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge to everyday work and contexts.

The course comprises 3 components; Units 1 and 2 are internally assessed and students are expected to produce coursework, these are completed during Year 10.  The 3rd Unit is externally examined usually in this examination is taken in Year 11.

The Award gives learners the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment.

The main focus is on four areas of equal importance, which cover the development of key skills, such as:

  • Interpreting data to assess an individual's health.
  • Designing care plans and care pathways to support patients.
  • Learning about the 6 Cs (care values) and how they are applied in a care setting.
  • Learning about human growth and development, health and social care services, and factors affecting people's health and wellbeing.

What knowledge and skills will students develop at KS5? 

Welcome to the BTEC National Diploma in Health and Social Care.

This Level 3 course is worth the equivalent of 2 A Levels.

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Certificate in Health and Social Care aims to provide an introduction to the sector.  It is for learners who are interested in learning about the health and social care sector as part of a balanced study programme.  The qualification supports access to a range of higher education courses possible, but not exclusively, in health and social care, if taken alongside further Level 3 qualifications.

The course comprises 3 externally assessed units and 5 other units which are coursework assessed.

Students study all aspects of Health and Social Care such as physiological illnesses, promoting public health, human lifespan development and working in health and social care.  There is also the opportunity to take part in a period of work experience at a health and social care placement.

Enrichment and extra-curricular activities 

Students will have the opportunity to undertake a work experience placement in a related field.

Guest speakers who are employed in this sector currently, will come to the Academy to meet classes and conduct question and answer sessions.

Students will have the opportunity to take part in virtual and real-time workshops with professionals who work in this field.

How can students extend their thinking and challenge themselves in this subject? 

Students can watch documentaries about this sector and consider how they show the 6Cs or other important concepts.

They could volunteer at a local care home or health care provider for some extra work experience.

Students who study this course will have access to Google classrooms for additional resources and news feed items so they can keep their knowledge up to date.

What are the career opportunities for students that study this subject? 

Students who take this course go onto study related fields at university such as nursing, midwifery or health care management.

A career in the Health and Social Care sector would be a natural progression for students who are successful at this course.

Level 1/2 Tech Award

Students who take this course can go onto study A Levels at Post-16 (if a Level 2 pass or higher is achieved) or pursue a range of technical routes designed to lead to employment.

Level 3 National Certificate

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Certificate in Health and Social Care is generally taken alongside other qualifications as part of a 2-year programme of learning.  This will enable learners to progress to a degree programme chosen from a range of programmes in the health and social care sector.  The qualification is intended to carry UCAS points and is recognised by higher education institutions as contributing to meeting admission requirements to many relevant courses.  It can be taken alongside, for example:

  • a BTEC National Foundation Diploma in Children's Play, Learning and Development, which could lead to a Foundation Degree in Early Years Playwork and Education
  • A Level in Biology and further Level 3 qualifications, which could lead to a BSc (Hons) in Nursing
  • BTEC National Extended Diploma in Applied Science, which could lead to a BSc (Hons).
