Design Technology

Key Stage 3

Grouping/organisation/setting/teaching time:

Students are grouped in mixed ability sets. They attend 1 hour per week. The Design & Technology sessions rotate on a termly basis.

Course Content/Skills Learnt:

Students complete a range of projects across the years within each focus area that include a funky apron, wrapping paper, healthy eating recipes and a passive amplifier.

Assessment:

All students are assessed against the National curriculum levels for Design & Technology.

We would recommend the Key Stage 3 Design and Technology Guide by Richard Parsons.

Homework:

Students are set homework on a fortnightly basis.

How parents can help:

Parents can help support students by ensuring that homework is completed. Encourage further practice of skills at home.

This qualification is designed for learners with an interest in food preparation and cookery. It will provide them with the basic skills required to plan, prepare and cook healthy meals for themselves and others.

WHAT AND HOW WILL YOU LEARN?

These qualifications provide the ideal introduction to the construction industry and cover essential skills in the following construction trades:

  • Bricklaying
  • Site carpentry
  • Plastering
  • Painting and decorating
  • Flooring
  • Wall tiling
  • Plumbing

You will learn the basics of the construction industry and basic skills required to have a career in that industry. You will learn how to use workshop tools and equipment and how make or repair things.

WHAT AND HOW WILL YOU LEARN?

OCR GCSE Art and Design: Fashion and Textiles is a practical course.  You will learn through completing projects that are based on typical workplace situations with a fashion and textile focus.

You will gain knowledge and understanding of materials, techniques and processes used within fashion and textiles.  You will also develop your design and making skills through sketchbook based work and the creation of final fashion and textile outcomes.  Gallery, workshop and exhibition visits will be organised to extend and enrich your learning.

WHAT AND HOW WILL YOU LEARN?

The OCR GCSE Art and Design: 3D Design/Graphics is a practical course.  You will learn through completing projects that are based on typical workplace situations with a Product Design and Graphics focus.

You will gain knowledge and understanding of materials, techniques and processes (wood, metal and plastics) used within 3D/Product Design and different ways of communicating and working in Graphic Design (publishing, packaging, corporate identity, advertising, web design).  You will develop your design and making skills through sketchbook based work and the creation of final design outcomes both on the computer and physically.  Computer aided design and Computer aided manufacture will be carried out using a laser cutter, CNC router and 3D printer. Gallery, workshop and exhibition visits will be organised to extend and enrich your learning.
