At Southfields Academy we are achievement focused in all aspects of academy life. We are in the top percentile of schools nationally for value-added results. We have a positive ethos with an emphasis on teaching and learning. Our curriculum is wide and varied and provides young people with remarkable opportunities to study, develop their skills and, more importantly, enjoy learning. We offer a wide range of courses. Of course, we offer the traditional academic subjects, but in addition to this we offer vocational and work-related courses that can prepare and equip our students with the knowledge, skills and abilities for their chosen careers.

We have a flourishing Sixth Form which offers a gateway to university, apprenticeships or employment / training.

In 2014 53% of our students in KS4 achieved 5+ A*-C with English and mathematics. In the 6th Form our AS and A2 results yielded improvements against every category of grades, the most improved performances across all Wandsworth secondary schools. Over 100 of our Sixth Formers left last year to commence degree courses at university.

In June 2013 Her Majesty’s Inspectors graded the school as ‘Good’ in all areas of the Ofsted framework. It particularly praised the leadership, the excellent curriculum offer and teaching and learning.

We have a number of initiatives at the academy which continue to help raise the standards of achievement of our students. We constantly review and reflect on these to strive for greater achievements for our students.

In 2011 we gained National Teaching School status (one of the first 100 in the country).

As a high performing specialist school specialising in sport and applied learning we have developed cross-curricular links which are motivational for our students and which promote pathways for career opportunities. We work closely with our cluster of primary schools to ensure a smooth transition from key stage 2 to the start of their secondary education.

Aspire@ is the community arm of the academy and we continue to work closely with our community of primary schools, secondary schools and special schools alongside adult and community learning to engage everyone in lifelong learning and an active lifestyle. In 2011 we opened the ‘nursery@aspire’ to fulfil our vision of ‘lifelong’ learning. In 2014 we celebrated the graduation of our first nursery cohort.

We have gained an Artsmark award for our excellence in Art & Design, Dance, Drama and Music and a National Healthy Schools Award for our excellent catering provision for our students.

As a SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training) provider we continue to train graduates from industry and P.G.C.E. students, many of whom we employ, leading us to be in the enviable position of being fully staffed in every curriculum area.
This year we are pioneering a S.C.I.T.T. centre for mathematics education.

We believe in a true partnership between all stake holders – teachers, support staff, students, parents, trustees and the wider community – to support what we want to achieve: high quality teaching and learning with high expectations of the standards of behaviour.

Southfields Academy is the umbrella organisation for the Aspire Centre (our Adult & Community Learning, Sports facility and Community work), the Southfields Teaching School Alliance (our Initial Teacher Training, Research & Development and Professional Development) and nursery@aspire (a self-contained, purpose built nursery school which has the unique provision of being able to take advantage of the amazing facilities of Southfields Academy).

Academy Trustees

The Trustees of the Academy fulfil statutory obligations with regard to the National Curriculum and its assessment, the special educational needs of students, sex education and ensuring a daily act of collective worship for all students. Trustees are involved in the approval of Academy policies, we monitor the effectiveness of Academy initiatives and provide a challenge to the Principal.

The Full Board of Trustees meet 3 times a year following the meetings of the committees. The four committees that report to this meeting are:

  • Policy and Finance & Premises
  • Curriculum
  • Every Child Matters
  • Personnel

Trustees take an active role in the life of the Academy. Termly visits are arranged where they can see the day to day work of the Academy, but most Trustees visit more frequently. The Chairs of the sub committees will additionally meet regularly with the appropriate Academy staff to review financial and premises issues as they arise. Trustees at Southfields are very much a part of the Academy community.


Primary Links

We have strong links with our feeder primary schools and have built in ways of helping our students make the transition from primary school to our Academy. All students who apply to the Academy are tested to see which ability band they are in. We also use the information from primary schools to support the test results. This enables us to offer places available in our five bands and to ensure that students are given appropriate support. All students are invited to our Induction Day in the summer term before they start in September. Students spend this day getting to know their tutor, classmates and the Academy. We can resolve any problems and set the students’ minds at rest so they do not spend the holiday worrying.  In September the students spend two further days at the Academy before the rest of the students begin.  This gives them a chance to get to know where their lessons are, who their teachers are and how the Academy works.

We are strongly committed to working closely with parents to ensure that students are encouraged in all aspects of their education and make the most of the opportunities offered them.
This partnership begins with a welcoming evening in November when all Year 7 students and their parents are invited to the Academy to meet their Form Tutor to ensure students have settled in to Academy life and are progressing well.
Once students are established in the Academy, parents are invited in to a consultation evening every year to discuss progress in the different subjects.

There are other evenings for parents throughout the year, which provide information and opportunities for discussion. Examples are the study support evenings providing ideas of how parents can help students in their studies and examination preparation.

More frequent contact is maintained through the Academy Diary. This is used by students to record homework, and we ask parents to sign it weekly to show their satisfaction with the work that has been done. It can also be used as a simple way of contacting the Form Tutor.

How Students are grouped

Each student is placed in a Tutor Group when they start at the Academy. The tutor is the teacher who takes the register every morning and afternoon and is responsible for monitoring the academic and personal progress of the students in their class. Year Managers lead each team of tutors in one particular year.
In year 7, students are taught in ability sets in English, Maths and Science, and in reduced size groups for ICT and design & technology. In most other subjects they are taught in their tutor groups.
Students are placed in ability sets for most subjects from year 8 onwards. The timetable is organised so that there is flexibility for students to change sets according to their achievements.

Beyond the classroom

Extra-curricular activities

Many clubs and societies are organised for the benefit of our students, some of which have been mentioned. They are intended to provide opportunities for students to extend their academic skills, develop socially and have fun! The following gives an indication of the variety of other activities students have been involved in.

Clubs and support clinics are run in the following areas:

Maths, English, Science, Geography, History, Design & Technology, Modern Languages, Art, Business & Information Technology,Integrated Learning, EAL support, Homework and the Library.

Societies and other activities:

Amnesty International Group, Drama, Instrumental Tuition, Choir, Band, Chess, and Debating.

Sports Clubs:

Swimming, Netball, Football, Basketball, Hockey, Trampolining, Athletics. A list of all the after school activities can be found in our Parents’ section. There are inter-school matches in many sports.

Some recent visits:

Science Museum, National Gallery, Rock Climbing (indoor and outdoor), University visits, Mountain activities weekend, 6th Form team building activities weekend, Languages trip to France, Victoria & Albert Museum, National Portrait Gallery, London Eye, Ice Skating, East Mersea Fun Day.

The Academy provides parents with reports twice a year which show students’ progress and attainment in each of the subjects studied. Opportunities are available to discuss these reports, either through the consultation evening or organised appointments.

Public Examinations

Syllabuses for external examination are chosen from a range of examining boards for suitability for the students’ learning needs. This means that we use a number of the different boards. Copies of syllabuses and schemes of work are available on request, though we would ask for a few days notice.

Progress through the Academy

All students are required to attain the academic standards laid down by the Academy in order to progress at the end of each academic year and the Academy may in its discretion refuse to progress any student who fails to reach any such standards.

Academy uniform

All students except the 6th Form are expected to wear the full Academy uniform. We ask parents to assist us by providing the uniform and by encouraging their daughters/sons to take pride in their dress. Academy begins at 8.15 am and ends at 2.50 pm
Hours of Teaching: 25 hours per week.

Admission & Prospectus

General Places.

Where the number of applications for admission exceed the number of places available, the following criteria will be applied in this order:

1. Children in public care (children looked after) and those who ceased to be children looked after because they were adopted, or because they became subject to a residence order, child arrangements order or a special guardianship order (Note 1).

2. Children with a known special medical or social need, who in the opinion of the Governing Body would be suitably provided for in the Academy.

3. Children who have a sibling on the roll of the school at the time of admission.

4. Children who live nearest to the school, using a straight line measurement from home to school as calculated by Wandsworth Council’s Geographical Information System*.

Note 1: A child looked after is a child in the care of a local authority or provided with accommodation by that authority in accordance with Section 22 of the Children Act 1989. An adopted child is defined by section 46 of the Adoption and Children Act 2002 or section 12 of the Adoption Act 1976. A residence order is defined by section 8 of the Children Act 1989. A child arrangement order is defined by section 8 of the Children Act 1989 as amended by section 14 of the Children and families Act 2014. A special guardianship order is defined by section 14A of the Children Act 1989.

*Measurements produced by alternative measuring systems will not be taken into account in any circumstances.

Appeal Arrangements

Applicants refused a place at the Academy will have the right of appeal against the decision to an independent admission appeal panel established under the School Standards and Framework Act 1998. Application forms are included in the ‘Choose a Wandsworth School’ booklet. If you are a non-resident, or your child attends a school, outside Wandsworth, application forms are available from your child’s primary school or your local education authority.

Criteria for Admission to Southfields Academy

Southfields Academy accepts students across the whole ability range, to ensure a balanced intake. Students admitted to the Academy will take part in assessments in English, Maths and Science during their first term at Academy. The Academy will place students in sets in each of these subjects according to attainment levels achieved in these assessments. The setting is fluid and reviewed each term.
